“Greentech.Ruhr connects solution providers and users of green and sustainable technologies. We showcase the excellence of the Ruhr region in this sector to the world: world class environmental solutions.”
In the Ruhr metropolis, the preconditions and timing for smart city development are excellent.
Change has become a natural process in the region, having mastered structural change from coal and steel towards a knowledge-based services and technology-oriented business location. The Ruhr region boasts the highest density in terms of universities and scientific institutions in Europe and its expertise in green and sustainable technologies is renowned throughout the world. A former steel mill location is now a lake, former breweries and coal mines today are locations for creative industries or have been reused as modern workplaces.
This development was enabled by high-tech solutions and services of greentech companies located in the region. Greentech.Ruhr is an initiative that connects innovative businesses, educational and research institutions as well as public organizations that are active in the greentech sector from all over the Ruhr region. In doing this, Greentech.Ruhr bundles all competences for the development of green and sustainable smart cities and markets them outside the region and internationally.
Facilitating the exchange between actors from energy generation and energy efficiency, raw-material and material efficiency, sustainable mobility, sustainable water management, waste and recycling management as well as environmental management leads to innovation and growth of the greentech sector in the Ruhr metropolis.
This success story is the outcome of the long experience and vast expertise in tackling environmental challenges and solving pressing problems by tapping into the dense research landscape, the pool of highly qualified environmental talent, and the innovative businesses located in the region.
Greentech.Ruhr is a project of Business Metropole Ruhr in cooperation with the cities of Bottrop, Essen and Oberhausen, and the Recklinghausen district. Greentech.Ruhr is funded by the European Union.
